Free single-sided evaluation board with download capability for 8051, 8052 and related microprocessors
EV51WZ1 is a small evaluation board, intended to be a cheap but useful tool
for learning of programming 8051 and similar microcontrollers.
Because EV51WZ1 and the accompanying software is free, it may be also
used as a part of other microcontroller based devices.
The board has been optimized for being manufactured at home. Therefore the
printed board is rather large, but single-sided.
May be I'll find some time to
prepare the another version with smaller, but double-sided board.
The important advantage of EV51WZ1 is the download capability:
The microcontroller's program may be downloaded through the RS232
interface, so there is no need for burning EPROM again and again,
or for using an EPROM simulator when you are developing your program.
To get more detailed information about the EV51WZ1, you should click
here. You may also view the
schematic diagram of EV51WZ1.
The diagram below lets you take a first look at the EV51WZ1,
but if you want to prepare your own board, you should use
the
PDF version of printed board
or the
complete EV51WZ1 package.
Unfortunately, when I was designing the EV51WZ1, I was using DOS, not
Linux,
and therefore the PCB layout included in the package is in
Easytrax format.
All utilities included in EV51WZ1 package are also prepared for DOS.
However now there is the
Free DOS available, so it should be no problem.
The EV51WZ1 software for Linux users
- There is available a source of
download/communication software for Linux users. It requires, that you
have the "setserial" and "stty" utilities, and that the user who runs the
program is granted a write access to the appropriate /dev/ttyS? device.
- The source of BINMIX program, necessary to
prepare the EPROM for system
with "mixed" address and/or data lines is available under the
GPL license.
This source compiles with gcc (gcc -o binmix binmix.c).
- There is also available the configuration file
for Linux version of BINMIX.
Plans for the future
Below is the list of problems, which should be solved by me
(or someone else, any help is always appreciated) in the (near) future.
- Version of the
EV1WZ51 dedicated for 80C550
(with 8 bit 6 channel ADC) is already built,
but not documented. It may be used as an low cost intelligent A/D
converter (it is a part of my new free project:
OASIS
- Open Analog Signal Input System).
- Version of the
EV1WZ51 dedicated for 80C552
(with 10 bit 8 channel ADC) is on the way. It will be a part of the
OASIS system too).
- There is still need for new versions of PCB - two-sided, but
smaller.
- For low power application (eg. with battery power supply) there
is a need for GAL-less memory management system. It should be as
simple as possible (considering the amount of IC's and PCB routing),
but providing
pretty all downloading capabilities of the original EV51WZ1
